How to Live with Integrity as a Christian(part one)
Integrity is an essential part of Christian character. To understand how to live with integrity as a Christian, we must recognize that integrity begins in the heart and is demonstrated through our words, decisions, relationships, and conduct. A Christian who lives with integrity seeks to honor God consistently, whether people are watching or not.
The Bible says, “The integrity of the upright guides them” (Proverbs 11:3). Integrity gives direction because it helps us choose what is right according to God’s Word rather than what is convenient or popular.
What Does Integrity Mean for a Christian?
Christian integrity means living honestly and consistently according to the truth of God’s Word. It involves allowing our beliefs, words, and actions to agree with one another.
Integrity does not mean that a Christian is perfect. Believers can make mistakes and need God’s forgiveness. However, a person who walks in integrity does not deliberately make a lifestyle of dishonesty, hypocrisy, or disobedience. Instead, they are willing to repent, receive correction, and continue growing in Christ.
Psalm 15:1-2 asks who may dwell in God’s presence and describes such a person as one who “walks uprightly, and works righteousness, and speaks the truth in his heart.”
How to Live with Integrity as a Christian
1. Make God’s Word Your Standard
The foundation of Christian integrity is God’s Word. Our culture, emotions, friends, and circumstances can change, but God’s truth remains dependable.
When faced with difficult decisions, ask yourself, “What does Scripture teach about this?” Rather than allowing convenience to determine your choices, allow God’s Word to guide your conduct.
Jesus said, “If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed” (John 8:31).
A life of integrity begins when we submit our choices to biblical truth.
2. Be Honest in Your Words
Integrity requires truthfulness.
Christians should be people whose words can be trusted. This applies to conversations at home, in church, at work, in business, and online.
Avoid lying, exaggeration, deliberate deception, and misleading statements. Speak the truth with love and wisdom.
Ephesians 4:25 teaches believers to put away falsehood and speak truthfully to one another.
Our testimony is strengthened when people know that they can trust what we say.
3. Keep Your Commitments
One practical way of learning how to live with integrity as a Christian is to become faithful in keeping your word.
If you make a commitment, make every reasonable effort to fulfill it. If circumstances prevent you from doing so, communicate honestly rather than simply ignoring the commitment.
Jesus taught His followers to let their “Yes” be yes and their “No” be no (Matthew 5:37).
Faithfulness in small commitments develops a reputation for reliability.
4. Live the Same Way in Private and Public
True integrity is tested when nobody is watching.
It is possible to appear spiritually mature in church while making completely different choices in private. Christian integrity calls us to pursue consistency in every area of life.
Ask yourself:
What do I watch when nobody is around?
How do I speak when I am angry?
How do I handle money when nobody checks?
How do I treat people who cannot benefit me?
What choices do I make when there is no applause?
God sees what people cannot see. Therefore, our desire should be to please Him rather than simply maintain a good reputation before others.
5. Practice Integrity in Your Work and Business
Christians should demonstrate integrity in the workplace and marketplace.
This means being honest with customers, employers, employees, colleagues, and business partners. It means refusing dishonest practices even when they appear profitable.
Proverbs 11:1 says, “A false balance is abomination to the LORD: but a just weight is his delight.”
Our Christian witness includes the way we handle money, contracts, responsibilities, products, services, and professional relationships.
