Faith in Times of Hardship
Part 1: Holding On When Everything Falls Apart
Theme Scripture: “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” – Psalm 46:1 (ESV)
Introduction:
Hardship has a way of shaking the very foundations of our faith. Whether it’s a sudden loss, a prolonged illness, a financial crisis, or a deep betrayal, trials have a voice. They whisper, “God is not here.” But the truth of God’s Word shouts louder: “I am with you always, even to the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20).
Faith in hardship is not the absence of pain or questions. It is the determined clinging to God when everything else is crumbling. It is remembering who God is, especially when life doesn’t make sense.
Devotional Reflection:
1. God Is Present, Not Absent
The psalmist doesn’t say God might be a help. He says God is our refuge and strength, a very present help. That means He is not only aware of your struggle—He is right there with you in it.
Like the fourth man in the fiery furnace (Daniel 3:25), God enters the fire. He doesn’t just call you to endure it; He chooses to be with you in it.
Reflection: In what area of your life do you need to remind your heart that God is not absent, but present?
2. Faith Is Trusting God’s Character, Not Just His Works
It’s tempting to believe that faith means seeing immediate results. But biblical faith often involves holding on before the miracle.
Job said, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15). That is faith refined by fire—faith that rests not in outcomes but in the unchanging nature of God.
Reflection: How can you anchor your faith in who God is—rather than in what you want Him to do?
3. God Uses the Broken Seasons to Build Unshakable Trust
King David knew what it meant to be on the run, misunderstood, and betrayed. Yet in the caves and wilderness, his trust in God was forged.
The dark places often produce the deepest worship. Your hardship is not wasted—it is producing endurance, character, and hope (Romans 5:3–5).
Reflection: What might God be building in your life through this season of brokenness?
Action Steps:
- Start a “Faith in the Storm” Journal.
Each day, write one way you saw God’s hand, one promise you’re clinging to, and one prayer from your heart. - Speak the Word Aloud.
Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). Declare scriptures like Psalm 46:1 and Isaiah 43:2 every morning. - Ask for Help.
Faith doesn’t grow in isolation. Reach out to a fellow believer or pastor and ask them to pray with you.
Prayer:
Father, when life falls apart, teach me to hold onto You. Remind me that You are my refuge and strength. Even when my emotions fail, let my faith rise. Help me see Your hand in the dark and trust Your heart when I don’t understand. I choose to hold on. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
